High School – A Big Decision
BCMS held its annual High School Information Night on November 20th. Several nearby high schools came out to tout their programs. At the event, former BCMS students proudly wore their high school logos representing a variety of high schools. They shared with our eighth grade students, and parents, all of the wonderful programs that their high school offers.
Times certainly have changed. In the not so distant past, students simply attended the high school according to their residence. This meant that nearly all of the 8th grade students could plan on seeing their friends after summer as they went on to the same high school together. Students have more options now, which means that our 8th grade students will likely be going off to a variety of high schools as they continue on their educational path.
High Schools from Centinela Valley are now offering several academies for our students to choose from including Engineering, Visual and Performing Arts, and Marine Science. Our students also can apply to attend local charter schools including the Hawthorne Math and Science Academy, Da Vinci, and the Environmental Charter. Charter schools may use a lottery system to select students. There are also local private schools that our former students attend including Vistamar and Serra High School.
With all of these options, our eighth grade students have a big decision to make. Best of luck to our eighth grade students as they find the high school that is their “perfect” fit.
